Organization: Organized with 12 companies as the 12^th Infantry Regiment Volunteers at Raleigh, Wake County, on July 11 1861. Companies C and D became Companies A, 28^th, and A,26^th Infantry Regiments before the regiment was mustered in. Mustered into Confederate service for 12 months at Raleigh, Wake County, during the summer of 1861. Reorganized on June 13, 1862. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia,on April 9, 1865.
