OPPORTUNITIES FOR PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT


For the last several years, the park has been working with the public to find innovative ways to protect its collections, improve its interpretation, and remove two outdated buildings from a place where men fought and died during Pickett's charge. We thank everyone who has commented, come to public meetings, and helped us to date, and invite all of you to continue to lend your time and thoughts to us throughout the coming year.

April 6, 1995: Concept first considered in response to an unsolicited proposal from a local developer, NPS holds public meetings and initiates a public process to evaluate the proposal.
April 20, 1995: Public workshops to review proposal May 24, 1995: Public workshops to review proposal as part of a 65-day public review period to gather public comments.
August 1995: NPS rejects unsolicited proposal
in favor of a new, broader look at its needs and a nationwide call for proposals.
November 2, 1995: Public scoping meetings and beginning of a 30-day public review period to gather the public's issues and concerns.

April 17, 1996: Public workshops to discuss NPS needs and develop site and proposal selection criteria.
May 8, 1996: Public workshops as part of a 60-day public review period to gather public comments on the park's draft Collections Storage, Museum and Visitor Center Development Concept Plan.
DECEMBER 11, 1996: A Request for Proposal for a new collections storage, museum and visitor center was issued.

MAY 11, 1997: Proposals due to NPS MAY 22, 1997: Park General Management Plan initiated with public scoping workshops and a newsletter.
JULY 9 and 10, 1997: General Management Plan continues with workshops and a newsletter to describe the park's resources.
AUGUST 20 and 21, 1997: General Management Plan continues with public workshops on concepts for the park's future
OCTOBER 15, 16 and 18, 1997: General Management Plan continues with public workshops on a new combined concept and a newsletter describing all the concepts for the park's future to date
NOVEMBER 8, 1997: NPS announces selection of proposal for further negotiation for its collections storage, visitor center and museum proposal; public review of the proposal is folded into the park's General Management Planning process, which is underway
November 20, 1997: Information and gathering public comments on the proposal selected for negotiation, Gettysburg NMP Advisory Commission. All advisory commission meetings, past and future, provide public comment periods.

Late December 1997: Informational Newsletter to present additional details on the proposal selected for negotiation mailed to 4000 on the park mailing lists.

Early January 1998: Advisory Commission sponsors peer review on site's history and GMP history methodology.
Mid-January, 1998: General Management Plan public workshops to explore issues and impacts from the alternatives for the park's future, including the proposal to be negotiated.
Late January 1998: Informational Newsletter to explore issues and impacts mailed to the 4000 on the park mailing lists.
Late January –February 1998: Open Houses at park to allow the public to see the park's resource conditions first hand.
February 19, 1998: Special GMP workshop as part of the Advisory Commission meeting, to explore issues and impacts.
Early April 1998: General Management Plan workshop to explore issues and impacts. May 1998: Issue Draft General Management Plan and begin 60-day public review period.
Mid-May and Mid-June 1998: Public Workshops to gather comments on draft GMP August 1998: Respond to public comments and issue Final GMP.

Begin 30-day no action period.

Record of Decision: General Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement is finalized.
